Cattle

Alberta is the largest cattle-producing province in Canada, with an estimated 5.5 million head in 2010. Alberta’s cattle industry began in the late 1800s as English and American settlers recognized the unique characteristics of Alberta and its extensive grasslands. As the industry grew to include feed-lots, water was sourced from the local irrigation district. Alberta fed nearly 2.2 million cattle in 2009, much of that made possible by the availability of water from the irrigations districts.
