The southern irrigated region is an ideal location for the production of beans, peas and other pulse crops. Widely used for both human consumption and for animal feed pulse crops are fich in fibre and low in sodium.

In 2022 92,394 acres of pulses were grown under irrigation. Dry beans and dry peas were the largest proportion grown at 53% and 34%. Fresh peas made up about 5% of this acreage.
